anubis gates: tim powers

2013

Evocative design for a deluxe slipcased edition of Tim Powers' classic time travel novel.

Tim Powers' award-winning novel, The Anubis Gates, was first published in 1983. The signed and numbered, slipcased Centipede Press edition features painted artwork by David Palumbo.

For the case and book covers, iconographic Egyptian hieroglyphs pair with a restrained geometric design in black, red, and silver. The title hieroglyphs say as close to “Anubis Gates” as Google scholarly skills could muster. The keyhole die cut in the middle of the matching case halves references the unlocking of the gates. The interior design features full color, using red as a liberal accent color and an Islamic-inspired geometric design for the chapter facing pages.

The tipped-in elements feature a double-gatefold map of 1810 London that detailed all the major plot locations in the book, and a single-gatefold infographic explaining the body-swapping and temporal gates that occur in the book.
